Project aims to restore Green River wetlands
Published Monday, July 20, 2009 at 12:55 PM
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. (AP) _ Green River wetlands that all but vanished when the Fontenelle Dam was built in 1966 could reappear next year. A $650,000 project to divert water back into the historic oxbows, pools and channels near the town of Green River will be finished in 2010. An earlier project that was completed in 1996 was intended to feed water to the wetlands, but a decade-long drought kept water flows too low. When the drought eased, the project was plagued by sediment, a leak and other problems. An engineering firm designed a reconstruction plan for the 45-acre wetlands system last year. Officials hope it will function better under a variety of conditions.
