Food Safety Discussion Continues in House Ag Committee
Published Monday, July 20, 2009 at 05:31 AM
The House Ag Committee held another hearing - its fourth this year - to review current food safety issues Thursday. Farmers, ranchers, consumer group representatives and USDA and FDA officials participated as witnesses. Virginia Representative Bob Goodlatte said it’s clear that committee members and witnesses are concerned about the new authority the Food Safety Enhancement Act gives FDA to regulate on-farm production practices - noting none of the producer witnesses at the hearing would support the measure.
According to Goodlatte - the notion that FDA can dictate to farmers in every region of the country - who grow and produce a vast array of crops and livestock for a range of markets - is irrational. Ag Committee Chairman Collin Peterson says ensuring a safe food supply is a top priority for the committee.
