Irrigators in the Mitchell irrigation District have for the last few years been told their storage water in the Glendo Reservoir would probably not come into priority storage for the year. Last year a rainstorm in early May allowed the Mitchell Irrigation District to fill it's water allotment. Again this year, John Lawson, the Wyoming Area Manager of the Bureau of Reclamation in Casper says the likelihood of the district coming into priority this year wasn't looking good. Linda Keener, Office Manager at the Mitchell Irrigation District, says there is now good news for district water users.
Keener says "John Lawson at the Bureau (of Reclamation) has told us the Gleno ownership is full. Mitchell has their full 12,000 acre foot of storage water is available up there. The reason for that is apparently between May 21st and May 25th there was about 8 inches of rain between Wheatland and Glendo. Which is exactly where we need it".
Keener says the Glendo Reservoir is also nearing the flood plane. For the last two years, Mitchell Irrigation Districts producers have been forced to make cropping decisions before knowing if or how much irrigation water they might have for the irrigation season.
