Extension Presents Program to Address Harvest Issues

LINCOLN, Neb. -- University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension is planning a special program to help advise farmers on how to deal with the challenges of the 2009 harvest. A cool summer and wet fall has delayed harvest, which has exacerbated ear rot and mold diseases. "Harvest 2009" will be broadcast to UNL Extension offices via satellite and also will be streamed on the Internet beginning at 10 a.m. Central Time (9 a.m. Mountain Time) on Wednesday (Nov. 18), but also will be available through other venues later this month and early December, as well as archived online. The program will be shown Wednesday in UNL county extension offices across the state. The program will include a live call-in segment allowing observers to ask questions of UNL experts. Producers interested in watching the program at their local extension office should call the office to get details. In Scotts Bluff County, the program can be viewed at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center, in the Monument Room. The program also will be archived online for later access and will be aired on NET 2 later this month and in early December. In addition, portions of the program will be edited for airing on UNL Extension's "Market Journal" program Nov. 19. Topics to be covered include: handling and drying higher moisture grain, ear rots and grain molds, potential for mycotoxin accumulation, marketing options for high moisture corn and livestock sensitivities to mycotoxins The program will be shown on the Internet at http://real.unl.edu/harvest.php An edited version of the program will air on UNL Extension's weekly "Market Journal" program. Air times on NET 1 will be 7 a.m. Nov. 21 and 9 a.m. Nov. 22. Air times on the Dish Network, UniversityHouse Channel 9411 are 12:30 p.m. Nov. 20, 9:30 p.m. Nov. 22 and 8:30 a.m. Nov. 25. "Market Journal" also is archived at http://MarketJournal.unl.edu ; it will be available there after 1 p.m. Nov. 20. In addition, a 90-minute version of the "Harvest 2009" program will air on NET 2 at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 26, 1:30 p.m. Nov. 29, 7 p.m. Dec. 3 and 1 p.m. Dec. 6.
