USDA Distributes 1.3 Billion in Electric Loans

Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer says 44 rural utilities and cooperatives have been selected to receive 1.3 billion dollars in loans to build and repair nearly 1-thousand miles of distribution and transmission lines serving almost 85-thousand customers in 24 states. The funding is being awarded through USDA Rural Development's Utilities Programs.

The Secretary proclaimed - USDA investments in the nation's rural electric system provide safe, reliable electricity to power homes and businesses. He added, - these loans help strengthen rural communities.

As an example of how the monies will be used, the Basin Electric Power Cooperative, in Bismarck, North Dakota will receive a 325 million dollar loan to finance the Leland Olds Stationemissions control project. It will enable the company meet Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
