Curly Calf Syndrome Investigation Underway
Published Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 04:52 AM
During a 10-day period, between September 6th and 15th, the American angus Association received written and verbal reports of 48 calves previously born dead with physical characteristics consistent with “Curly Calf Syndrome”. Curly Calf Syndrome causes calves to be born with bent and twisted spines.

47 of the 48 calves contained 1680 genetics on both sides of the abnormal calves’ pedigrees. Experts say – with the assumption of a simple recessive inheritance pattern, the risk for producing a calf affected with this syndrome can manifest itself when the recessive gene is found in both the sire’s and dam’s pedigree.

As of yet, there does not appear to be any other mode of inheritance or reported environmental factors that explain this specific syndrome in these reported calves. A University of Illinois livestock geneticist is working to find the gene that causes this mutation. The hope is this research can help in the development of a DNA test to identify its presence or absence in any animal.
