USDA has released 117.2-million dollars in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. These funds will be used as water and environmental project loans and grants. Selected are 31 water and wastewater projects that will help rebuild and revitalize the nation's infrastructure while creating or retaining jobs. In making the announcement, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack said, - Recovery Act projects are helping rural communities of all sizes build a foundation for economic strength, future prosperity, and a healthy environment.

For example, in Anderson, South Carolina, Starr-Iva Water and Sewer District will receive a 3.2-million dollar loan and a 2.7-million dollar grant to provide a new water system to more than 400 residents of Anderson County. The new system will replace individual wells - many with poor water quality. And the City of Swainsboro, Georgia will receive a 6.4-million dollar loan and 7.2-million dollar grant to repair and renovate a wastewater treatment plant including installing a new main line, repair of a pump station and collection lines.
