Late freeze kills over 10,000 acres of sugar beets

Sugarbeet producers have been seeing the results of the cold temperatures of last weekend and the picture isn't very pretty. Jerry Darnell, Western Sugar Area Ag Manager says "We're estimating that about 10 - 12 thousand acres will have to replanted from Saturday mornings freeze".

All indications are that the lost acres will be replanted to sugarbeets. Darnell says "We currently have everybody replanting or getting ready to replant as soon as they finish their planting corn. So hopefully by this time next week we hope to have everyone replanted".

Darnell says there will probably be enough round-up ready seed to plant 4,000 to 5,000 acres and the rest will be replanted to conventional sugarbeet seeds.
