Prairie Pothole Benefiting from Conservation Programs
Published Monday, October 06, 2008 at 04:51 AM
A recently completed study concludes that two conservation programs provide benefits on more than five million acres of wetland and adjacent grassland habitat in the Prairie Pothole Region. The Prairie Pothole region stretches north from central Iowa and north east Nebraska. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer told participants in the White House Conference on North American Wildlife Policy - voluntary conservation efforts have proven benefits to a vast region of significant wetland acres that provide excellent wildlife habitat and benefit local residents.

The study quantified how the establishment and management of prairie wetlands and associated grasslands through the CRP and WRP have positively influenced ecosystem services. The report says soil loss was reduced on 682 thousand acres by an estimated average of 1.9 million tons per year. Also, plant growth and bird habitat have been improved.
