Nebraska dry bean harvest nearly complete
Published Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 10:21 AM
Nebraska looks to fairing better than other dry bean producing states like North Dakota, Minnesota, and Michigan. A survey of area processors show harvest to be 85 - 95 percent complete across the Wyobraska region. Most of the dry beans left to be harvest are still standing in the field, with a much smaller percentage laying in the field. Last week growers were carefully watching the weather forecast as they rushed to harvest the tail end of the crop. The biggest concern from the snowfall, moisture and freeze is the impact it will have on the quality grade of Nebraska's dry edible bean production. Processors are concerned about wrinkling and bean discoloration. While the snow is quickly melting from dry bean fields, it will be several days before fields dry enough to complete dry bean harvest.
