LINCOLN, Neb. -- An Aug. 23 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Organic Farm Tour at the Forestry Research Area at UNL's Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead will focus on adding cover crops into organic crop rotations.

The field tour will be from 10 a.m.-noon. Refreshments will be served.

Liz Sarno, UNL organic project coordinator, will lead the field tour, which includes: cover crops planted following organic winter wheat harvest, discussion of various cover crops that work for eastern Nebraska and methods for weed control and cultural practices.

John Quinn, UNL graduate student, will give an update on the Healthy Farm Index, an assessment tool being developed to help evaluate a farm's ecological and economic health.

Richard Little, organic wheat breeding specialist and coordinator, will provide an update on organic winter wheat variety trial yields and agronomic data. Preliminary results from the study of wheat canopy cover and nitrogen top dressing experiments also will be discussed.

To get to the Forestry Research Area, start out on Highway 77 north of Lincoln toward Wahoo. Turn east on Highway 66 and travel seven miles to the top of the hill, just past the August N. Christenson Research and Education Building. Entrance to the Forestry Research Area is on the left next to a row of trees. Take the farm road north one-half mile to the buildings on the left. If coming from the north via Mead, take Road 10 south to Highway 66, turn west and go one-half mile to the gravel farm road on the right.
