Flu Info Available to Pork Producers
Published Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 05:10 AM
The interim guidance contains information about recognizing the signs of flu in pigs, taking steps to prevent the transmission of influenza viruses from pigs to people and vice versa, surveillance and monitoring of workers' health, identifying high-risk groups, administering influenza antiviral drugs and vaccinating swine workers.
Also, USDA wants producers help in tracking the H1N1 flu virus. The Department wants hog farmers to submit samples of sick animals to be tested for Novel H1N1 influenza. Samples are needed in order to detect and track the virus, as well as develop, improve and stockpile vaccines for U.S. swine. USDA expects to receive 27.75-million dollars in supplemental funding to track the virus and develop vaccines.
