Cold weather concerns Panhandle Farmers
Published Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 12:38 PM
Five of the last six days has had overnight lows dropping below the freezing point. Panhandle farmers are out in the field surveying the damage from the hard freezes. There are reports of damage of sugar beets and winter wheat. A true assessment of the damage will be released in the couple days. Western Sugar Cooperative Area Manager Jerry Darnell says 1,000 acres of sugar beets will need to replanted in the Morrill, Baird and Kimball area from last weekends cold weather. University of Nebraska Extension Dry land Crop Specialist Drew Lyons says the wheat condition in the southern Panhandle is not far enough along to have sustained damage. Lyons has seen burning of tips in one case, but overall the wheat has not developed to the jointing stage where damage would impact the yield. Panhandle Research and Extension Weed and Chemical Specialist Bob Wilson urges producers to check the weather forecast before spraying crops.
