Iowa Recovery Moving Forward
Published Wednesday, July 02, 2008 at 04:53 AM
Here is some of what is going on now in Iowa to help those people recover from June’s floods. The veterinary staff of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is providing support of pet shelters in Iowa as needed. And APHIS staff, along with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is actively participating in the recovery and disposal of livestock carcasses. Also, USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service workers are assessing dam safety, identifying high risk areas and developing plans to reduce risk of additional flood damages.

NRCS is working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture to ensure producers - as well as local, state and federal agencies - have the information needed on suitable locations for disposal of animal carcasses by making soils suitability maps available on line.

Also, NRCS is working with local communities to determine Emergency Watershed Protection requests. And NRCS is working very closely with farmers who need repairs to Environmental Quality Improvement Plan conservation practices, local partners, FEMA, and the emergency operations center.
