Walking weed eaters gain popularity with ranchers
Published Saturday, September 06, 2008 at 01:33 AM

Among farmers and ranchers, goat grazing still isn't close to replacing chemicals as the preferred method of keeping invasive weeds in check.

But sightings of the sturdy creatures, whose unusual eating habits and four-chambered stomachs make some consider them the garbage disposal of the animal kingdom, are becoming more common, as are sheep.

Last year, the Nebraska Natural Resources Conservation Service started a program to help ranchers pay for services like those offered by Michelle Wendell.

She loads up her camper and travels anywhere in the state her goats are needed to control weeds.
