NE Soybean Association elects officers and announces award recipients

Debbie Borg of Allen, NE was elected to serve as NSA President. Borg will begin her first term as President and oversee the functions of the state organization. Borg previously served as Vice President of NSA. Borg said "One of my main priorities is education for grassroots soybean growers. We need viability for soybean producers and all of agriculture. Whenever we look at a soybean field, we need to see high protein soy meal for livestock and biodiesel for a greener world—to recognize the important link we play in all of agriculture, not just food but fiber and fuel too."
Scott Richert of Gresham, NE was elected vice-president. Richert serves as the At Large director for NSA. Rodney Smith of DeWitt, NE was elected to serve as Treasurer and he currently serves as the district 9 director. Also elected to serve as Secretary of NSA was Jim Stewart of Lincoln, NE who represents the 10th district.
Chairman of the Association is past President Bill Miller of Upland, NE. Miller serves as an advisor to the executive committee and will represent NSA in various capacities throughout the year.
Elected to a first year term as a state director was Geoff Ruth of Rising City representing district 7 and Scott Richert of Gresham representing the At Large seat. Re-elected as district directors were Debbie Borg of Allen representing district 1 and Bill Miller of Upland representing district 12. Steve Wellman of Syracuse representing district 8 completed his final term at the annual meeting.
Receiving NSA’s 2007 Soybean Promoter Award during the Nebraska Ag Classic was Dr. James E. Specht of the University of Nebraska. Dr. Specht, Professor of Agronomy and Horticulture for the University of Nebraska joined the agronomy department in 1974 as a soybean geneticist. Early in his scientific career research funding allowed him to show soybean producers how irrigation timing was critical for yield optimization. He has been involved with a soybean research team to search for germplasm expressing better drought tolerant traits. Specht received his Bachelors of Science in Agronomy as well as his Ph.D degree in genetics from the University of Nebraska. He was honored in 2004 with the award of a UNL Charles E. Bessey Professorship. He continues to be active in leading soybean research at UNL. This award is presented annually to recognize and thank an individual who has shown outstanding leadership and given many hours of their time to the betterment of the soybean industry.
Receiving the 2007 top membership recruiter award was Jim Stewart of Lincoln.
