Governors' Wind Coalition Calls for National Standard
Published Friday, March 19, 2010 at 11:16 AM
The 29-member Governors' Wind Energy Coalition has called for a national renewable energy standard (RES). In releasing a set of recommendations this week, the bipartisan coalition marked the first time state governors have called for an RES. The coalition calls for the nation's utilities to provide a minimum 10 percent of their electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal and biopower, by 2012. Coalition chairman, Gov. Chet Culver (IA) said the nation could support an RES of 25 percent by 2025, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs. The group also emphasized a goal of providing at least 20 percent of the nation's electric needs from wind power by 2030 as called for in a recent assessment by the DOE of wind's prospects and impacts in the United States. The governors also recommended the development of new interstate electric transmission system infrastructure to provide access to renewable energy resources; the streamlining of permitting processes for wind energy development projects; an expansion of the DOE's work with the states and the wind industry to accelerate innovation; an extension of a Treasury Department's program that provides grants in lieu of the investment tax credits; and the adoption of a long-term renewable energy production tax credit.
