Published Monday, March 30, 2009 at 03:11 PM
The fire continues to smolder today at feedlot south of Brule. A massive hay fire started Saturday afternoon at Northwest Cattle Feeders. Jeff Cox, feedlot manager, says there were no injuries to humans or to the 15,000 head of cattle in the feedlot. Cox says the state fire marshall believes the fire started from internal combustion in a ground hay pile. He says the hay was spread out, but with winds over 30 miles a hour Saturday it was tough to contain the fire.

Cox estimates 1000 - ton of hay or approximately 2,000 bales of hay was lost in the fire. The hay loss is estimates the hay loss at around $60 - $100 thousand dollars. Cox says fire fighters were able to protect the mill and office from being impacted the fire, however two four-wheel drive tractors were also destroyed. About 70 firefighters responded to try to contain the flames that sent plumes of smoke and ash across Interstate 80.

He says things are getting back to normal Monday, as they are able to feed out of the mill today, but they continue continue to monitor the hay stacks. Cox says it will take a little time, but we'll keep going. The cattle have to be fed". The feedlot is owned by the family of Nebraska State Senator Ken Schiltz of the 47th district.
