Monument celebrates 75th Anniversary of Summit Road
Saturday, September 15 will be a fee free day as the Scotts Bluff National Monument marks 75years of driving to the top of the bluff. The road opened to park visitors on September 19, 1937 after four years of work culminated in the paving of the 1.6 mile road.
Events on Saturday include ribbon cutting to open the road at 8:00 am. Local car clubs are invited to bring their vintage cars to lead the way to the top evoking the opening day in 1937.
Later in the day cake will be served in the Landmark Room as
people who helped build the road and others share stories about the
construction of the road. There will be displays of newspaper articles covering the construction and events that have taken place on the road over the years. A slide show will display a variety of pictures of the
construction.
