Lincoln police consider buying two segways

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ The Lincoln Police Department is considering whether to buy two Segways to use for neighborhood patrols. The department will test a pair of the two-wheeled transportation devices during an upcoming festival before making a decision. Each Segway costs about $6,000. Segways are used by about 400 police departments nationwide. They travel about 12 mph, but don't run on gas. Police Captain Doug Srb says the Segways would be helpful because officers who ride them have higher vantage points and stand out in a crowd. Skeptics claim officers have similar advantages when the ride bicycles, which are much cheaper. But Officer Jason Hellmuch says bikes don't work well in crowded areas and make wider turns.
