June trial set for Crawford Police Chief
Published Friday, March 06, 2009 at 09:48 AM
A trial date has finally been set for former Crawford Police Chief Rick Thompson in the fatal shooting of a teenage burglary suspect more than 17 months ago.

Thompson formally pleaded not guilty this morning before Dawes County District Judge John Murphy, who ordered a June 9th trial.

Thompson faces a single count of 2nd degree assault handed down by a grand jury in the October 2007 death of 16-year old Jesse Britton.

Thompson remains free on his initial $50,000 bail...which included provisions that he not have any guns and that he stays out of Crawford.

Murphy...based in North Platte...also scheduled a telephone hearing for next Wednesday on a defense motion to take depositions from several experts who took part in the investigation, and he gave both sides until April 17th to file all motions in the case.

Murphy...who succeeded Judges Brian Silverman and Randy Lippstreu in presiding over the Thompson case...did not schedule a pre-trial conference, saying he doesn't believe in them for criminal cases.

Britton was killed October 3, 2007, when confronted by Thompson and Nebraska Game and Parks Conservation Officer Dan Kling in a vacant bar in Crawford.

Both officers say they fired when Britton allegedly swung a pistol in Thompson's direction, but defense attorney Marty Connealy says there are a lot of details that are still unclear including the sequence of shots and which hit Britton.
