Dawes Sheriff rolls department's new pickup
Published Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 08:26 AM
The newest cruiser in the Dawes County Sheriff Office fleet didn't even make it to its maiden patrol. Sheriff Karl Dailey rolled the pickup Monday afternoon about 8 miles west of Hemingford while returning from Scottsbluff where some of its law enforcement equipment had been installed.

Dailey says his attention was momentarily diverted as he was "tweeking" the radio and the cruiser drifted into the wrong lane. The sheriff over-corrected and the pickup went into the ditch, struck a berm, and rolled.

Dailey was wearing his seat belt and was uninjured. He says the accident offered two lessons: always wear your seat belt, and accidents can happen to any driver...no matter how experienced or well-trained.

The damage to the new cruiser is covered by insurance, but Sheriff Dailey says the repair process means his office will be short one vehicle for at least a week.
