No increase in rates for Hay Springs based power district

Customers of Hay Springs-based Northwest Rural Public Power District won't be seeing a rate hike next year. Co-op board chairman Bruce Troester says while operating costs are expected to go up, the board has decided to cover those with reserves rather than a rate increase.

Northwest Rural has been forced to increase rates each of the past 5 years to pass along increases it received from its wholesale supplier...Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association.

Almost 2/3rds of Northwest Rural's retail rates are made up of the wholesale power costs charged by Tri-State.

Troester says Tri-State is not asking for a rate increase in 2010, but he expects more increases from the power provider in the future...since Tri-State has plans to spend about $1.9-billion dollars in the next decade on new power plants and other infrastructure.
