Alliance council gives West Plains Grain proposal initial OK
Published Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 09:44 AM
An ordinance that will re-zone 158 acres of land northwest of Alliance was given unanimous approval on first reading by the Alliance City Council Thursday night.

The land, located southwest of the intersection of County Road 61 and Madison Road, will be re-zoned from Agriculture to railroad Industrial which will make way for the development of a high-speed grain train loading facility by the West Plains Company of Kansas City, Missouri.

During a public hearing, the land's owners, Mark Kimmel and Brad Schnell, spoke in favor of the re-zoning. Schnell told the council that they believed the grain loading facility would help upgrade the region's economy and broaden the tax base.

The council will review the re-zoning ordinance again during their July 15 meeting.
