Deputy State Fire Marshall Mike Turner estimates there was $50,000 in damage to a building housing a small engine repair shop that caught fire Monday afternoon. Turner says the loss to the business, General Power Air Cooled Engines, is still unknown. But he did say some small engines were lost as well as some materials used in the business. The building is approximately two miles west of Scottsbluff.
Turner says hot ash that was dumped outside from a wood burning stove inside the shop started the blaze. Turner says the high winds whipped the ash inside wood pallets stacked outside and they ignited. The northwest corner of the building, where the office area was located, received the most fire damage.
The business is owned by Ken and Rhonda Fitzgerald, who leased the property from Henry and Susan Huber.
