Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug has filed 2 more felony charges against 25-year old Joe Hotz of Rushville, accused of the brutal stabbing death of his roommate last Friday. Haug says a further review of evidence that included 911 tapes led to an Amended Complaint that added a fourth count of felony use of a deadly weapon and one count of attempted robbery.
Those are in addition to the 1st degree murder, attempted murder, terroristic threats, and weapons charges filed Monday in connection with the death of 22-year old Kenny Pfeiffer.
911 calls about a residential break-in and an attempted burglary at another home resulted in Hotz's arrest, which in turn led to the discovery of Pfeiffer's body in the house he shared with Hotz. The two were Chadron State College students living off campus.
Hotz continues to be held in the Dawes County jail on bail of $5-million dollars. with a ten percent cash provision. Arraignment on the new charges will be done next Wednesday in Dawes County Court as part of a previously scheduled appearance with counsel.
Pfeiffer's family will hold a memorial service Thursday in his hometown of Sebastian, Fla.
Hotz is being represented by the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, while has represented the defendants in virtually all of the state's capital punishment cases since its creation in 1995.
