Panhandle to benefit from tire recycling and cleanup projects

Department of Environmental Quality Director Mike Linder say the money will help gather in nearly 1.2 million scrap tires. $1.1-million is specifically for local scrap tire collection events with a goal of more than 11,600 tons of tires..
The tires will be converted into crumb rubber for playground surfaces, running tracks, artificial turf surfaces, and leachate collection systems and around septic tank laterals.
Nearly $399,000 of the total will help buy rubber-modified asphalt for repaving nearly 21 miles of state highways, while other tires will be hauled to scrap tire landfills outside of Nebraska.
Five of the Panhandle grants are for tire cleanups. The largest is nearly $43,000 for the Scotts Bluff County Health Department to accept as many as 400 tons of tires.
Sidney is getting almost $37,000 for 300 tons of tires, Kimball over $20,000 for 180 tons, Banner County $11,000 for 100 tons, and SWANN...the Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska $8,200 for 60 tons of tires.
Keep Alliance Beautiful has been awarded $6,700 to continue a 2-year old program to purchase landscaping mulch made from recycled scrap tires. The grant will pay half the cost of 40,000 pounds of mulch that individuals and organizations can purchase in bulk.
The Morrill School District is getting almost $21,000 to help pay for an all-weather track. The grant covers a quarter of the costs of the project, which will use about 40 tons of crumb rubber from recycled scrap tires.
The Gordon-Rushville School District is receiving 3 grants for playground projects at Gordon Elementary. Two totaling about $4,300 are for 50% reimbursement of placing crumb rubber in playgrounds, while another of more than $5,900 is for a 25% match on timbers and mats made from crumb rubber.
The money for the grant program comes from the $1 fee that people pay on the new tires they buy in Nebraska. Residents generate over 1-1/2-million scrap tires a year, about 1 for every person in Nebraska.
