FORT LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) _ The National Park Service will hold a celebration at Fort Laramie National Historic Site in two weeks to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the post.

Frontiersmen built the fort in 1834 to serve as a hub for trading buffalo hides with the American Indians. It was originally called Fort William after its founder, William Sublette.

The Army purchased the fort in 1849 and renamed it Fort Laramie. The fort was a prominent site on the Oregon Trail and at one time was the largest military post on the Northern Plains.

The Historic Site's 175th anniversary event is June 19-21. The weekend will include presentations by experts of the western fur trade and a re-creation of a trappers camp. ___
