Chadron residents Nancy and Rolland Sayer testified Thursday in the first degree murder trial of Joseph Hotz of Rushville, who is accused of stabbing to death his Chadron State College roommate, Kenneth Pfeiffer, last December 5.

The couple were victims of a residential break-in allegedly involving Hotz shortly after the killing of Pfeiffer. Nancy Sayer testified a man matching the defendant's description entered the home carrying two knives. Sayer said she left the house and hid in her van parked in the driveway, while her husband remained in the bathroom.

Rolland Sayer said he pushed the bathroom door open, but was blocked by a man holding two knives, who told him he was going to kill him. Sayer said he saw what he thought was blood on the man’s shirt, but could not identify him because he was focused solely on the knives.

Sayer said he was able to grab a cordless phone as he shut the bathroom door and barricade himself inside.

Sayer said he called 911 and indicated he needed help immediately as the man started stabbing through the door with a knife, and screaming.

Rolland Sayer said, eventually, the knife had stopped coming through the door, and he came out of the bathroom and the man was gone. He said he saw his wife at the front door of the house, and called authorities to let them know everyone had been accounted for.

The trial continues Friday at the Dawes County Courthouse.
