Hyannis school board closes Ashby school

A K-6 Attendance Center in Ashby will close at the end of the current school years.

The Hyannis School Board Friday night voted to close the attendance center.

The vote was five to one.

On February 9, the Hyannis School Board voted 5-1 not to pay for an estimated $30,000 in upgrades required by the State Fire Marshal's office to keep the center open. However, at the request of the parents of the Ashby Attendance Cener, the board held a special meeting Friday night to reconsider its earlier vote.

Hyannis Superintendent of Schools Mike Davis says the Ashby Attendance Center is a K-6 school with 12 children. The district employs three full time teachers, a half time Para-Educator and a part time custodian in Ashby. Davis says the district is spending roughly $140,000 a year to operate the Ashby building.

Davis says the K-6 students who attended the Ashby Center will be able to utilized bus service from Ashby to Hyannis next year.
