Sioux Co. resident's protest taken under advisement
Published Thursday, July 02, 2009 at 08:22 AM
A protest over higher property valuations drew some 50 to 60 Sioux County residents to the courthouse in Harrison yesterday. Organizer Jim Voeller had sent out 650 letters about his TEA...Taxed Enough Already...Party protest.

Voeller...who provided hot dogs to the audience...complained that valuations should not have increased this year because there were too few property sales to show any pattern, and said timber land burned in the 2006 fires should not have been reclassified as rangeland.

Voeller appeared before the Sioux County Commissioners...sitting as the Board of Equalization...to protest his valuation and many of the others attended as wel. They joined him in urging the board to find a way to change the valuation system to something that reflects the realities of the market.

The commissioners said they lacked the time and staff for such a project, and all parties discussed joining with other area counties for a joint effort.

Many of the protesters told the commissioners they would support spending county money to join other counties in hiring an attorney or lobbyist to take their complaints and concerns to Lincoln.

As for Voeller's valuation hearing, the commissioners took his protest under advisement and said they would issue their ruling later in month with the other valuation protests they will be hearing.
