12 Ton of hay being donated to starving horses
Published Friday, April 24, 2009 at 09:27 PM

Hay is for horses and there is lots of hay coming from the farmers and ranchers of Nebraska Farm Bureau. The malnourished horses of Three Strikes Ranch will graze on locally-grown, premium alfalfa hay. Larry Zimmerman, Vice President of Member Services, says they will donate 24,000 pounds of hay to the horses and burros of Three Strikes Ranch.

Zimmerman says they are bringing 12-ton of hay, but may seek more if necessary. It is unclear how long the horses will be at Bridgeport. Zimmerman says they have heard estimates from 2 days to two weeks.

Zimmerman says Nebraska Farm Bureau members across the state are worried about the situation at Three Strikes Ranch. He says "We are very concerned about the neglect that happens there. We hope everyone understands that this is not something the ranch or farming communities let occur unnoticed , because this happens very rarely. We want to be sure the horses are fed and get back on their feet and possibly can be adopted later on here."

The hay will be delivered to the Morrill County Fairgrounds in Bridgeport at 3 p.m. Saturday (April 25th). Local members of the Morrill, Box Butte and Scottsbluff County Farm Bureau Chapters are donating the $3,000 worth of hay. The first cutting alfalfa hay was grown by Dan Carnine of Angora, Neb.
