CSC added as site for judgeship public hearing

The Nebraska Judicial Resources Commission has added Chadron State College as a site for its June 8th public hearing on the retirement next week of County Judge James Hansen of Chadron.

The panel can choose to fill the vacancy being created in the 12th Judicial District, or move the judgeship to another part of the state. If it's not filled, Chadron would be without a resident judge.

The commission will meet in Lincoln, but with a teleconference site at the University of Nebraska center in Scottsbluff.

Private citizen Roger Suhr asked Supreme Court justice Michael McCormack to add Chadron as a site, arguing the issue was far too important for Chadron not to also be a site for the teleconference. McCormack relayed word Tuesday that the hearing would also be available at the Chadron State College Student Center's Scottsbluff Room.

County Judge Glen Camerer of Scottsbluff has been urging Panhandle residents and leaders to attend the June 8th hearing and let the Resources Commission know how important they feel it is to keep the county judgeship in the Panhandle.

Chadron lost its district judge 2 years ago when the Resources Commission moved the seat to the Kearney area following the retirement of Paul Empson.

Judge Camerer says the size of the city and the presence of Chadron State College makes it important to have at least 1 resident judge in Chadron.
