Hotz is accused of stabbing 22-year old Kenny Pfeiffer of Sebastian, Florida more than 50 times in the house they shared. Both men were Chadron State College students.
His defense team...Dawes County Public Defender Paul Wess and Jeff Pickens from the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy...has indicated it may offer an insanity defense, and recently had Hotz evaluated by a mental health expert.
The prosecution...Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug and Deputy Attorney General Doug Warner, a former Scotts Bluff County prosecutor...asked to have Hotz examined by an expert of their own, a request granted by District Judge Brian Silverman.
Despite the additional evaluation, Judge Silverman says he plans to stay with the current schedule that has Hotz scheduled for trial during the September 8th jury term.
Hotz faces 8 felony counts, including first degree murder and attempted murder. Some of the other counts involve alleged home break-ins that led to his arrest and the discovery of the murder.
They include terroristic threats, attempted robbery and 4 counts of felony use of a deadly weapon.
Hotz has remained in custody since his arrest in December. His bail remains at $5-million dollars.
