Gering woman accused in Scottsbluff firm's internal theft
Published Monday, December 22, 2008 at 04:46 PM

A Gering woman has been released on a $2,500 cash bond after her arrest for the embezzlement of more than $116,000 from Print Express. 49 year old Jeannette Vanderveen, an employee of the company, was taken into custody for felony theft as she arrived for work. She will appear in Scotts Bluff County Court January 2nd.

According to a court document related to the arrest, Vanderveen is accused of writing checks on the business account to pay bills on three Capital One credit cards and another account that may be her mortgage. The court document says an audit of bank statements revealed the theft from the business account of nearly $26,000 in 2006, almost $47,000 in 2007, and over $43,000 in 2008. Owner Penny Yekel told Police there were additional losses in 2003 and 2004, but the statute of limitations does not allow the filing of criminal charges for those years.

The court document says Yekel described Vanderveen as a long-term, highly trusted employee who payed the bills and reconcileed the bank statements. The document says Yekel's credit card company notified her that her business account was being used to pay multiple credit card accounts.
