Significant property damage, but no injuries, were reported Monday afternoon when a fast developing thunderstorm produced 81 mile per hour wind gusts swiftly moved through Scotts Bluff County with little warning. The strong winds with heavy rain were hurricane-like, moving from west to east, with the most severe damage at Lake Minatare where a tornado developed.

Pam Stover with the North Platte Valley Boat Club said the storm destroyed boats and severely damaged cabins and sheds. Stover was confident what she experienced was a tornado because of the severity of the winds and the fact boats were thrown into the air. Stover said there was also a lot of flooding of structures because of the heavy damage to cabin roofs. The area was also without electricity and water after the storm although crews were busy trying to get utilities back on and the roofs repaired to some extent. Stover encouraged sightseers to stay out of the area not only Monday evening but in the coming days to allow power and water to be restored, and allow for cleanup and damage assessment.

KNEB's Larry Hubbard reported tree branches snapped off on the Jim Dietrich farm twelve miles northeast of Scottsbluff, falling on vehicles and farm equipment. At the nearby Larry Schwab farm, a shed was blown over and windows were blown off the west side of the farmstead.

Larry Roper at County Road 28 and County Road E a mile and a half west of Lake Minatare said part of the roof on his porch was destroyed, as well as an overhead camper, and a newly built goose blind. He also reported irrigation pipe was scattered in his alfalfa field by the winds that moved in a counter-clockwise fashion like a tornado. Damaged roofs and downed power lines and trees were reported at a number of locations north and east of Scottsbluff.

While there was some damage reported in Scottsbluff-Gering, including a tree falling on the roof of the old Scotts Bluff County Jail in Gering, most of the damage in the cities was confined to broken windows, and downed power lines and trees that caused power outages and traffic signal outages.

Stover says the storm came through the lake area with little warning, noting her weather radio went off just two minutes before the storm hit.

Dayweather Meteorologist Don Day says the cold front that triggered the storms was expected to set off thunderstorms Monday, but the severity and rapid development of the storms was somewhat of a surprise. The front came in a few hours later than expected allowing for maximum heating of the day to occur. That also caused the severe weather to develop further north than expected.

Rainfall amounts vary from .47 at KNEB to 7 tenths 3 miles northeast of Mitchell were power was reported back on about 10:00pm last night.
