OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Gov. Dave Heineman has named Scotts Bluff County Attorney Derek Weimer (WY-mer) as the new 12th Judicial district court judge. The 34-year-old Weimer will take over for Kristine Cecava (suh-CAVE-uh), who was not retained by voters in November. Weimer will serve twelve counties in western Nebraska but be based out of Sidney.

Scotts Bluff County Board Chair Mark Masterton says he has mixed emotions,,,, proud Weimer was appointed but sorry he's leaving the county's employment. Scottsbluff Police Chioef Alex Moreno says law enforcement will miss Weimer's dedication and enthusasm for his job

Masterton says the county will advertise for a successor to Weimer, taking cover letters and resumes before conducting interviews and making a decision. Masterton says depending on the time it will take Weimer to begin his new duties, the county might not need to name an interim County Attorney. Prior to serving two years as a the county's lead prosecutor, Weimer was named a partner at Kovarik, Ellison, Mathis & Weimer, P.C. in 2003 after joining the firm to work as an associate in 1999.
