CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) _ The Wyoming Legislature's recent defeat of a tolling study for Interstate 80 has state transportation officials wondering what's next for the major east-west highway.
Officials say the Legislature's distaste for the idea of imposing tolls could result in higher gasoline taxes and more potholes in the coming years.
A bill calling for a study of the I-80 tolling issue passed in the Senate but died in the House.
State transportation officials say I-80 is in danger of deteriorating in coming years if the state doesn't roughly double the $68 million a year it's been putting into upkeep.
The Legislature's interim transportation committee plans to consider possible increases in the state's 14-cents-a-gallon tax on gasoline and diesel.
