Chadron fireworks mishap called "freak accident"

The grandfather of a Dawes County girl injured in a fireworks mishap Friday says he considers the accident a "freak occurence". The 3-year old remains at the Western States Burn Center at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burns suffered in a 4th of July fireworks accident at her grandparents home.

Sarah Smith was hurt when a multi-shot display fell on its side and a round struck her in the chest and exploded. Her grandfather...Jess Wild...says she received burns from her cheek to her waist, with her hand suffered the most damage because the round exploded as she was throwing it off her body.

Wild says doctors are optimistic about her chances of full recovery, but will have a better idea after examining her again Tuesday as swelling continues to decrease. Smith continues to receive pain medication and go through extremely painful daily scrubbings to remove burned skin.

Wild says the family has held its own fireworks displays for several years, with adults discharging them in a rodeo arena with children a safe distance away.

Witnesses say one display knocking over another, which then started slowly spinning and firing rounds. Family members began scattering and taking cover right away, but the 3-year old Smith was still watching when she was hit.
