State Patrol gearing up for the 4th
Published Thursday, July 03, 2008 at 11:41 AM
The 4th of July holiday weekend begins this afternoon at 6:00 with AAA for the first time in a decade that fewer people will be traveling more than 50 miles from home. Despite those figures, Lt Bret Friesz of the Nebraska State Patrol's Panhandle Troop E headquarters in Scottsbluff expects to see as many or even more motorists in the Panhandle than last year.

Law enforcement agencies around the country will be out in force for the weekend, with the Nebraska State Patrol putting out more troopers because of a traffic safety grant covering overtime costs.

Lt Friesz says a variety of special enforcement events are planned around the state...including several in the Panhandle...and they are listed on the patrol's website as part of the 100 Days of Summer program iniated in May.

Nebraska State Patrol Superintendent Colonel Bryan Tuma say the holiday special enforcement efforts are designed to reduce traffic deaths by getting the motoring public's attention...not by issuing more tickets.
