Minatare and Scottsbluff rural fire personnel continue to respond today (Monday) to a large grass fire north of Minatare to take care of hot spots. The fire, which Gering Fire Chief Jay Templar says was estimated at eight miles long by three and a half miles wide, was the combination of at least three fires early Sunday evening, all begun by lightning strikes. The blaze began around eight miles north of Lake Minatare and proceeded north along the Earl Henderson property into Sioux County. It filled the North Platte Valley with smoke Sunday evening.

More than a half dozen fire departments from around the region fought the blaze for close to six hours Sunday, including after dark. Minatare, Scottsbluff rural, the city of Scottsbluff, Hemingford, Gering, Mitchell, Bayard and the airport fire department were all at the scene. Templar says the rugged terrain was tough on equipment. He says they have flat tires and hose to repair.
