Governor Dave Heineman
The 12th Judicial District Nominating Commission has forwarded the names of two attorneys to Governor Dave Heineman for the vacancy created by the recent retirement of County Judge James Hansen of Chadron, who served as a Box Butte County Court Judge for 23 years.

The governor's office says he will schedule interviews in the coming weeks with Russell Harford of Chadron and Randy Cullers of Ord. They were selected from a pool of 5 applicants that also included Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug, Gregory Bartels of Omaha, and Gregory Jensen of Ord.

The Nominating Commission met yesterday in Gering, holding a public hearing on the 5 candidates and then meeting in closed session to make their selection.

Before becoming a lawyer, Harford spent 10 years with the Nebraska State Patrol, eight years as drug investigator in Chadron, but now has 20 years as a private attorney handling both criminal and civil cases. He's also served as a special prosecutor in several Panhandle counties.

As a result, Harford says he's has handled many of the cases that a county court judge would oversee. A support who testified on his behalf at the public hearing said the new judge "needs to be able to hit the ground running,” which he said Harford can.

Randy Cullers has been practicing law for 13 years, serving 4 years as County Attorney in Valley County and deputy County Attorney in Sherman County as well as in private practice.

At 38, Cullers was the youngest applicant. One commissioner asked if his youth might be a handicap if he were challenged by an older attorney, and Cullers said he would respond as needed, relying on his personal integrity, adding that things take care of themselves when handle appropriately and with good decisions.
