Dawes County Names New Road Boss

Dawes County has named longtime county road worker Harvey Keim as the county's first full-time Road Superintendent in 3 decades. He worked for the county for 31 years, the last 8 as a foreman.

Keim is both a certified superintendent and certified bridge inspector. County Commissioner Roger Wess says he's also the only one of the 3 applicants for the post to meet all the qualifications the county wanted.

Keim's advancement leads off a reorganization of the Dawes County Road Department...which has operated with 3 separate districts, each with its own foreman and headed by a County Commissioner.

There will now be a single county-wide district and only 1 foreman. Keim...whose job will be primarily administrative...hopes to help make the transition go smoothly.

Scottsbluff engineer Clint Schaff of M-C Schaff and Associates is currently contracted as the part-time superintendent, an arrangement that will end with the first of the year.

The commissioners say the lack of a full-time superintendent was one of the things that led to record-keeping and other violations cited in a complaint filed against the county earlier this year. The commissioners essentially pleaded "no contest" to the complaint, losing $54,000 in state road funds.
