Kimball County grand jury to meet April 17th
Published Thursday, April 09, 2009 at 02:00 PM
A Kimball County grand jury will meet April 17th to investigate the apparent March suicide of a Kansas man during a traffic stop near Kimball. The date of the grand jury's deliberations was announced today( Thursday) by Chief Deputy Scotts Bluff County Attorney John Childress, who was appointed to be the special prosecutor in the case.

Authorities say Kimball Police Captain Ken Lehr had stopped 25-year Keith Moyer of Colby on March 13 and tried to arrest him on a Cheyenne County warrant for 3 counts of violating a protection order and one count each of impersonating a police officer and intimidation by phone.

Before Captain Lehr could take him into custody, Moyer reached into the cab of his pickup and shot himself in the head with a small caliber semi-automatic handgun. He was taken to Regional West Medical Center by the Air Link helicopter ambulance, but died the next morning.

Because a Kimball Officer was involved in the initial traffic stop, the Nebraska State Patrol has been handling the investigation...standard procedure in such cases.

Nebraska law requires a grand jury whenever someone dies in police custody or while being apprehended.
