Hessler created the Scotts Bluff County Citizen Emergency Response Team, is a key member of the Panhandle Citizen Corps Network, served on the statewide CERT Standards Committee, and helped create the first collegiate CERT team in the state at Western Nebraska Community College...which became a model for other college campuses.
Hessler was honored Wednesday by Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy as the Citizen Corps Member of the Year. Hessler was acknowledged as Sheehy presented the state’s 2009 Be Prepared awards, which recognizes volunteers who make Nebraska communities safer, less vulnerable and better prepared to respond to natural disasters and emergencies.
Hessler says getting more people in the community prepared for disaster is his future goal.
Hessler says he's deeply honored by the state award, but and became emotional when reflecting on the work and accomplishments of all those involved with Scotts Bluff County CERT.
Hessler and his instructors have trained over 165 people and the Scotts Bluff County CERT team alone has 65 members.
