Huskers are a number one seed

For the ninth time in its history the Nebraska women's basketball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers are the number one seed in the Kansas City Regional and will begin play Sunday night in Minneapolis against the University of Northern Iowa out of the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Huskers, who dropped to fourth in the Associated Press Women's Top Twenty Five Monday, joined top ranked UConn, number two Stanford and third ranked Tennessee as number one seeds.

The Huskers held on to a top seed despite losing their first game of the season Saturday to Texas A&M in the semifinals of the Big 12 Postseason Conference Tournament in Kansas City. After a record tying 30 straight wins to start the season the Huskers will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 30-1 record. UNI is 17-15 following a one point win over Creighton in the finals of the MVC Postseason Tournament.

It will be the third trip to the "Big Dance for a Connie Yori coached Husker team. The last appearance came following the 07-08 campaign when they made it to the second round. They picked up their third tournament win ever against Xavier in the opening round before falling to Maryland. Overall the Huskers are 3-8 in NCAA Tournament play.

The first Nebraska appearance in the tournament came following the 1987-88 season when they lost to USC in the first round. The Huskers picked up their first tournament win follwoing the 1992-93 season when they beat San Diego in the opening round, but another loss to Southern Cal followed in round two.

The Huskers have never made it past round two of the tournament. Nebraska has also made the WNIT Tournament five times, including four under Yori.

All told seven Big 12 teams made the tournament including, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas and Texas A&M.
