Worden takes 1st in Kearney

Scottsbluff High School's Aubrey Worden won the Class B Girls State Cross Country title in Kearney Friday afternoon. Her time was :28 seconds faster than the second place finisher from Seward, but the Blue Jays also had the third place finisher and that propelled them to the team title at the Kearney Country Club. They finished with 30 points to outdistance second place Lincoln Pius X by 15 points. Gretna was another three points back in third. Scottsbluff settled for fifth place in the 12 team field.

Besides Worden the Bearcats placed Alexis Brisco in the top ten at ninth. Yadira Bernadec was 32nd for Scottsbluff. Gering placed ninth. The Bulldogs were paced by freshman Damaris Martinez with a 12th place finish.

Lexington won the Boys Class B title with 61 points, 14 better than second place York. Scottsbluff ended up in seventh place with 100 points. Gering was 12th.

For Scottsbluff Russell Morgan was 12th, Devvin Hayden was 23rd and Coulter Burkey ended up 27th. Gering was led by Albert Bustinga in 18th and Mason Nab with a 26th place finish. Dillon Dodson of Sidney, running individually was 22nd.

Fort Calhoun won the Class C girls title with 46 points. Pierce was second with 51 points. From the panhandle, Nikki Applegarth of Chadron was 41st, Mckenzie Watson and Laker Beaver, both of Mitchell, were 50th and 55th respectively.

In Class C boys competition Norfolk Catholic ran away with the team title with 27 points, 16 better than second place Ogallala. Chance Miller paced the Indians with a second place finish. Samuel Adams was fifth. Cole Wellnitz of Gordon-Rushville finished 8th and Logan Vogt of Chadron ended up 14th.

Crofton won the Class D girls title. Another of area girls competed. Kayli Rageth of Kimball was the top finisher amongst them in 38th. Karissa Austin of Morrill was 48th, Baily Wood of Hemingford finished 56th, Lizabeth Trevino of Bayard ended up 65th, Valerie Kesterson of Bridgeport was 76th and Kimball's Kaitlin Moritz was 83rd in the 123 runner field.

In Class D boys competition Hastings St. Cecilia was the winner by seven points over Ainsworth. Kimball finished 10th in the 15 team field with 147 points. They were paced by Daniel Evertson with a 24th place finish. Cody Franklin of Bridgeport was 42nd.

Class A team winners were Norfolk for the girls and Millard West for the boys.
