
The Chadron State College basketball teams will resume action in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this weekend by playing a pair of double-headers on the Western Slope of Colorado. The Eagles will take on Western State in Gunnison on Friday night and play at Mesa State in Grand Junction on Saturday night.
The CSC women are 6-6 after winning twice this week, while the men are 4-7 after dropping a pair of contests last weekend. Both teams are 1-3 in the conference.
The Western State women are 5-7 for the season and 1-3 in RMAC competition. The lone conference victory was a 90-80 win over Colorado Christian. They have lost to Colorado Mines (65-61), Regis (84-73) and Metro State (78-56) in league play.
The Lady Mountaineers have three players scoring between 11 and 12 points a game. They are 5-foot-6 junior Amber Murray, 5-11 freshman Brooke Pendergraft and 5-7 freshman Nikki Trujillo,
The Western State men are 6-6 overall after losing to the University of Colorado in Boulder on Wednesday night, 65-57. The Buffaloes led 26-25 at halftime.
The Mountaineers are 3-1 in the conference with wins over Colorado Christian (82-66), Colorado Mines (71-62) and Regis (75-72) and a loss to Metro State (68-59).
Western is led by 6-7 senior Cameron Burney, who is averaging 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. Next on the scoring chart is 6-3 senior Justin Avalos at 12.6 points a game. The Mountaineers like to shoot from 3-point range. They have connected for 105 treys, 20 more than their opponents.
This has been an uncharacteristically down year for the Mesa State women. They have lost seven games in a row and are 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the RMAC. They have been outscored by 7.7 points a game. Their top gun is 5-11 senior Stephanie Delgado, who is averaging 11 points and 6.2 rebounds a game.
The Mesa State men are 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference. They defeated Colorado Mines 72-69 and beat Regis 78-69 for their conference victories, but lost to Christian 76-67 and to Metro 68-62.
Ryan Mathews, a 6-1 senior, leads the Mavericks with a 16.8 scoring average. Jase Herl, a 6-3 junior, is second in scoring at 12.4 points a game. Herl is also the top rebounder at 7.4 a game.
The Chadron State men need increased production from several of their veterans to be successful. Three lettermen, senior Marco DeSouza, junior Tyler Coffman and sophomore Stacy McAlister, combined for just 20 points and 18 rebounds in the two games the Eagles lost last weekend.
The CSC women hope to continue their outstanding 3-point shooting. They are averaging just under 10 treys a game to rank third in NCAA Division II in 3-pointers per game. Overall, they are 119-286 from behind the arc for 41.6 percent after sinking 26 of 61 from afar in the last two games.
