COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Seven Chadron State College football players have been named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team, as announced by the RMAC on Thursday.
Two other Eagles garnered second team nods and one received third team recognition.
Senior placekicker Travis Atter of Buffalo, Wyo., is the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year.
Atter had a record-setting season in 2009. He made 18 of 24 field goals to break his record of 17 set in 2008. He also connected on all 38 of his PAT kicks, and became CSC’s all-time leader in kick scoring points (371) and career field goals (57).
Joining Atter on the first team are wide receiver Brandon Harrington, inside receiver Isaac Stockton, offensive lineman Ben Puffer, defensive end Cory Beran, linebacker Duke Eardley and punter Kevin Berg. Harrington was also a first team selection at kick returner.
Harrington, a senior from Grand Island, led CSC with 42 receptions for 575 yards and four touchdowns. He also averaged 27.4 yards on 18 kick returns. Harrington, along with Atter and tailback Mark Haag, are the only three players in school history to play in 50 games. For his career, Harrington is fourth in receptions (153), seventh in receiving yards (1,917) and sixth in touchdowns caught (14).
Stockton, a senior from Colorado Springs, who was also on the RMAC first team in 2008, is another receiver who had a distinguished career for the Eagles. This season, he caught 41 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns. For his career, he is sixth in receptions (145) and second in touchdowns caught (19).
Puffer, a senior from Hot Springs, S.D., is making his third appearance on the All-Conference first team. He started in 43 consecutive games and was a team captain in 2009.
Defensively, Beran and Eardley paced the Eagles.
Beran, a junior from Sargent, led CSC defensive linemen with 47 total tackles, six quarterback hurries and three pass break ups. He also had 5.5 sacks, nine tackles for losses, forced two fumbles and recovered two fumbles, one for a touchdown.
Eardley, a senior from Mountain View, Wyo., had a stellar season at middle linebacker. He led the team with 85 tackles. He also had two interceptions, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, five quarterback hurries, and two fumble recoveries.
Interestingly, both Beran and Eardley have brothers who also earned RMAC All-Conference status. Casey Beran was a three-time selection at defensive end (1996, ’98 and ’99), and Jeremy Eardley was a two-time selection at center (2000 and ’01).
Berg, a junior from Longmont, Colo., is CSC’s other first team member. He averaged 41.7 yards per punt and placed 14 of his 44 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. He also played safety, registering 42 tackles and two interceptions.
The Eagles second team selections are outside linebacker Jeff Lyster, a senior from McCook, and cornerback Jed Herblan, a junior from Arvada, Colo.
Nick Milani, a sophomore from Poway, Calif., is a third team selection.
The Eagles finished their season with a 7-4 record and a 6-3 mark in the conference.
The RMAC Offensive Player of the Year is Rustin Dring, a sophomore from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Darrell Morris, UNK’s head coach, is the RMAC Coach of the Year.
