OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Omaha Creighton Prep this fall will begin random testing of student-athletes for performance-enhancing drugs. Prep announced its plan Tuesday and becomes the first school in the state to test for substances such as anabolic steroids. New Jersey, Texas, Florida and Illinois mandate that high school athletes be tested for performance-enhancing drugs. Nebraska School Activities Association executive director Jim Tenopir says the idea has never gained traction in Nebraska. Prep athletic director Dan Schinzel (SHIN-zel) says his school has been studying the possibility of drug testing since last fall. He says Prep hopes random testing serves as a deterrent as well as an educational tool.
